Governor Dunleavy created a national conversation about the separation of powers when he took $335,000 from the Alaska Court System’s budget. The amount is roughly equivalent to the annual cost for complying with a court order to pay for abortions through the Medicaid program.
The court has often performed an essential role in checking the legislative and executive branches. But can the judicial branch of government usurp the power of the executive or legislative branch? How should the legislative and executive branches respond? Alaska Attorney General Kevin Clarkson and separation of powers scholar John Baker will discuss these and other related questions.
